On the Square since 1882
Martinborough is a quirky wine village, with a majestic square at its heart. Surrounding the Square are historic buildings, village cafes and boutique shopping. This picturesque wine village lies 75 minutes by road east of Wellington via the spectacular Rimutaka pass, and about three hours drive south of Hawkes Bay. The tiny town (pop. 1300) is hemmed in by 24 vineyards, most within walking distance from the hotel.
Start your wine trail with an introductory tasting at The Wine Merchant, suppliers of the largest range of Martinborough and Wairarapa wines in the world. If you are feeling energetic cycle picturesque country roads, to boutique cellar doors. Otherwise, take it up another notch and cycle all or parts of The Rimutaka Cycle Trail. The Rimutaka Cycle Trail has been named one of the world's hottest travel experiences for 2015 by travel guide Lonely Planet. South Wairarapa is a popular destination for all on and off road cycling.
Explore the dramatic coastline south of Martinborough past the extraordinary Puruatanga pinnacles, the setting for a scene from Lord of the Rings. The South Wairarapa coast is a renowned surfing location and a must for all surfing enthusiasts.
Discover the surreal fishing village of Ngawi, the seal nursery at Cape Palliser and climb 258 steps to the lighthouse to spot the South Island mountains across the churning Cook Strait. Drop into the pub at Lake Ferry for the freshest whitebait and old fashioned fish and chips, before returning for a malt in front of the hotel’s fire or a chat with the locals in the bar. Most of our guests drive to Martinborough from Wellington or along the Classic New Zealand Wine Trail from Hawkes Bay.
The journey from Wellington takes one hour. Trains stop at Featherston Station, with connecting shuttle transfers from the station to Martinborough.
