Sustainability Initiatives

Our Commitment

The Martinborough Hotel is committed to being a leader in responsible and sustainable tourism. We care about our people and our place, always striving to leave a positive impact on both.

To achieve this we continually review and adapt our internal and external practices to minimise any negative environmental impact.

We look to our guests as well as staff, business partners and the local community for cooperation to continuously decrease our impact on the environment.

Our sustainabile environmental practices include:

  • Guests are encouraged to reuse towels, in order to save water and reduce detergent use.
  • Energy saving light bulbs are installed throughout the Hotel
  • The Martinborough Hotel consciously sources electricity from Meridian due to their commitment to sourcing renewable energy.
  • Robust recycling programs in place in Hotel office and Hotel rooms to reduce waste.
  • We are continuously evaluating operations to ensure they are as efficient as possible and to minimise waste.
  • Gas and electricity consumption is monitored on an on-going basis.
  • Use of Ashley & Co toiletry products in rooms and common areas that are refilled, instead of small single-use items.
  • Buying New Zealand made to minimise the environmental impact of both production and distribution
  • Waste reduction in the office including printer and copier toner recycling, reduction of paper use, biodegradable bin liners and bags
  • Eco-Store biodegradable cleaning products used throughout the Hotel.
  • Dual-flush, water-saving toilets
  • Ongoing training of staff to ensure maximum participation in sustainable practices to improve company’s performance

We are determined to ensure New Zealand’s clean green image remains intact for our grandchildren, and their grandchildren. New Zealand is precious, and everyone who lives and travels here has a responsibility to look after it. We have promised to look after our country by committing to the Tiaki Promise. This embraces the Maori concept of ‘Tiaki’ meaning to care for our people and our place.

The Tiaki Promise is a commitment to care for New Zealand, for now and for future generations.

We encourage all our guests and visitors to embody Tiaki in their travels, to join us in acting as guardians of Aotearoa New Zealand.

For more information go to the Tiaki website.

We are proud to receive a Qualmark Silver rating for our Environmental and Social policy and continue to focus on improving our practices.

This means we have been independently validated as a quality tourism business. Qualmark is New Zealand tourism’s official quality assurance organisation, providing a trusted guide to quality travel experiences in New Zealand and providing our guests with the comfort that we are taking steps to be more sustainable from a people, planet and profit perspective.
